About Joule

About Joule

Joule is a volunteer-led organization working to advance equity in Alberta’s energy sector by strengthening leadership pathways where they matter most.

Built by women, Joule champions emerging female leaders—women with proven capability and leadership trajectory who are navigating the critical transitions in their career.

This is the moment where expectations rise, responsibility increases, yet support too often falls away. When that happens, progression stalls, retention breaks, and the sector loses talent it cannot afford to.

Joule exists to support women at that key point.

For over a decadefirst as Young Women in Energy, now as Joulewe’ve focused our collective energy on recognizing talent, strengthening leadership pipelines, and supporting the establishment of a more resilient and representative energy industry for everyone. While we continue to support women entering the sector, our work is intentionally concentrated where the system is weakest: the leadership inflection point.

Our work is grounded in data, lived experience, and an honest understanding of sector realities. We partner with industry, not around it—because meaningful change requires collaboration, not commentary. Equity isn’t abstract, it’s measurableand it requires sustained, deliberate effort.

Joule brings emerging female leaders together to increase visibility, expand networks, and build the confident capability required to lead. We also take a different approach to mentorship. Rather than relying solely on traditional top-down models, Joule emphasizes peer-to-peer connection, recognizing that shared experience, relevance, and proximity often create the most meaningful growth. This approach builds trust, momentum, and leadership confidence at scale.

We partner with industry, not around it.

When women rise into leadership, organizations perform better, decision-making improves, and systems become more resilient. And in a sector as complex as energy, diversity of perspective is not optional—it’s essential to continue keeping our energy at the forefront of innovation and excellence.

Why is Joule necessary?

We exist to retain, elevate, and prepare emerging female leaders across early- and mid-career—not someday, but now. Because leadership readiness doesn’t wait for a title, and equity can’t be deferred until the top.

Why Equity Matters:

When women rise into leadership, organizations become stronger, smarter, more resilient.

Diverse leadership teams make better decisions in complex environments—and energy is nothing if not complex.

<25%

In Canada's energy sector, women make up less than 25% of the workforce.

1 in 5

Women remain significantly underrepresented in senior leadership roles within Alberta companies.

Recent disclosures indicate that approximately one in five board seats for Alberta-based publicly listed companies are held by women, and women occupy a relatively small share of C-suite positions—highlighting persistent leadership gaps even as representation improves.

Equity work is often framed as aspirational. At Joule, it’s operational.
This work is incremental. It's not easy. But it's necessary, and it’s ours.

Let's get to work.

OUR MISSION

Joule exists to advance equity in the energy sector by strengthening leadership pathways for emerging female leaders.

OUR VISION

An energy sector where leadership reflects the full breadth of talent, experience, and perspectives shaping its future.

OUR tagline

Changing the Face of Energy

OUR VALUES

SUPPORTIVE

We build environments where emerging leaders are supported through connection, relevance, and shared experience—because leadership growth doesn’t happen in isolation.

INCLUSIVE

We engage all genders in the work of equity. Progress depends on shared responsibility—and on acknowledging that women experience distinct barriers to advancement that require intentional, targeted action.

IMPACTFUL

We prioritize work that delivers measurable value. Our programs, partnerships, and initiatives are designed to strengthen leadership pipelines—not just conversation.

INNOVATIVE

We challenge conventional approaches to leadership development by rethinking how women connect, learn, and advance—through experiences designed by women, for women, and grounded in the realities of today’s energy sector.

    • What drew you to Joule? I’m passionate about both the energy industry and advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Joule sits at the intersection of those two worlds. Working in a male-dominated space, I’ve found it incredibly motivating to connect with ambitious, passionate women across the sector who inspire me to keep pushing forward.

    • What did you hope to get out of it, and what do you get out of it now? Joule has given me so much — the chance to develop new skills, expand my network, engage with senior leaders, and help bring exciting events to life. Each experience has stretched me personally and professionally.

    • Why is volunteering important? Volunteering has been a central part of my life since university. To me, it’s a way of being an engaged citizen — like voting, but with my time. It allows me to contribute to causes I care about while also giving back to the community that has supported me.

    • What has been a highlight for you so far? The Summit stands out as a highlight each year, offering inspiring conversations and meaningful connections. Another unforgettable experience has been our annual Awards Program, which shines a spotlight on incredible women in energy and continues to be both motivating and life-changing.

    • What drew you to Joule? The energy around the organization was electric and I knew that if nothing else, I would have a heck of a time and meet some incredible people along the way.

    • What did you hope to get out of it, and what do you get out of it now?I had no idea the impact that this volunteer-run not-for-profit would have on my personal and professional career. It sounds cliche but the relationships that I have made with not only the other volunteers, but leaders who support the organization as well as industry peers, will be lifelong and have made a huge mark on who I am today.

    • Why is volunteering important? To me, volunteering is the proof in the pudding. When folks say they believe in a cause, and don’t put actions behind their words, it gives the impression to me that they’re not willing to be a part of what will actually move the needle. Volunteering is getting in the trenches with people who feel similarly, and being ready to learn, get dirty, and make things happen. To me, volunteering is about contributing to a brighter future for the next generations.

    • What has been a highlight for you so far? The Summit has been an experience that I have a hard time putting into words. The experience has 250 women in a space where most feel comfortable being vulnerable and open in ways I have not yet experienced in industry. It feels like a safe bubble where we come together to effect real change, meet new people, and have a heck of a time along the way. The Summit truly makes me believe that the change we all hope for is actually possible.
